re: FREE ADVICE: Commando DPS

For rotation, I used the 3.0 guide to get me started, not sure if that helps much at all?

re: FREE ADVICE: Commando DPS

For my Commando i don't use an actual rotation, I use a priority list:

Boltstorm(w/proc)>Demo Round(after a Grav Round)>Electro Net>HIB(at 5 stacks)>Vortex Bolt>Grav Round>Hammer Shots

For opener: pre-cast Grav Round>Demo Round+Supercharge Cell/or group buff>Electro Net>Vortex Bolt>Boltstorm>Grav Round>Boltstorm>Grav Round>HIB>Demo Round then into the priority list.

I think this may already be up on the 3.0 guide though. I also always save my supercharged cell(personal buff) for right when I have a proc'd boltstorm.

re: FREE ADVICE: Commando DPS

I have started working on a summarized version of the class guides for classes that I can play at a HM level.  See the link below for the Google Drive link to the document.

The idea behind these very summarized guides is to make an introduction to the class that's a little easier to digest than the Dulfy guides (i.e., only a page or two with an example parse).

I plan to add more classes but at the moment only have Watchman Sentinel and Gunnery Commando.  Eventually I plan to have the following:

DPS

  • Watchman Sentinel
  • Gunnery Commando
  • Vigilance Guardian
  • Tactics Vanguard
  • TK Sage
  • Assault Specialist Commando (may not add or will leave for last, it is still very difficult and doesn't do appreciably more damage than Gunnery)

Tank

  • Defense Guardian
  • Shield Specialist Vanguard
  • Kinetic Combat Shadow

Heals

  • Seer Sage
  • Sawbones Scoundrel
  • Combat Medic Commando

Google Doc Link:  Wyllym's Tips & Tricks

Hope these are helpful.  Happy to prioritize the above in any order if there is more interest in some classes than others.  As always, the Dulfy guides are very good if a bit dense.

With regards to Gunnery Commando, there weren't any meaningful changes to the 3.0 rotation.  In summary, Assault Specialist got nerfed so now the two classes do fairly similar DPS.  Given that Gunnery has a much simpler rotation and FAR easier resource management, Gunnery is pretty clearly the optimal DPS spec.  I would say that in comparison to all DPS classes, Gunnery is better positioned in 4.0 where a skilled player can be competitive with "stronger" DPS classes (e.g., Gunslinger, Sentinel, Vanguard).

I would summarize my 3 keys to success for Gunnery as follows:

  • APM.  Always be clicking!!  I did a sample parse for the guide and got to APM of 36.1.  I think I did okay on the rotation so that's a pretty decent target, especially since better geared players will have Alacrity boosting that a fair bit.
  • Proc Boltstorm every 8 seconds.  8 seconds doesn't work out to an exact # of GCD's so this gets to be more of a rhythm thing.  The # of abilities will fluctuate between 3-4 depending on various factors (i.e., is Grav Round instant cast at the beginning/end of each proc cycle, any Alacrity buffs, Supercharged Cell, etc.)
In my parse, Boltstorm did almost 40% of my overall DPS.  I used it 24 times in a 3:15 parse, so that works out to 8.125 seconds per use.  Not sure how that compares to a real expert in the class (i.e., Ansley) but that's decent.  That was definitely the key to a pretty good parse given my average-to-poor gear level.
  • Prioritize higher damaging abilities, even above Boltstorm when appropriate.  For beginners, hitting Boltstorm as soon as it procs is okay since that's the #1 damaging ability.  For advanced players, it can be beneficial to delay Boltstorm to use Electro Net, Demo Round, High Impact Bolt, and Vortex Bolt first.  Those all have a cooldown that you can't change, so the faster you use them the more often you can use them.  For example, my parse only used 14 Demo Rounds but did close to as much damage as 43 Grav Rounds.  Squeezing in a few extra of these over a boss fight will definitely help!
The timing for this is even trickier, since you need to make sure to leave room to channel Boltstorm and to cast Grav Round to proc Boltstorm again as close to 8 seconds as possible.  Again, you have to feel around a bit until you get comfortable with it.
