re: FREE ADVICE: Jedi Sentinel

This is for Phett

I posted this picture to show Phett how I do my rotations on my Watchman Sentinel, and how the hotbars are set up. Following Dulfy's watchman guide, you can see how the top 4 segments of 6 follow the core rotation, the 3rd hotbar is my stun and cc breaker and most of my opening rotation.

re: FREE ADVICE: Jedi Sentinel

I have started working on a summarized version of the class guides for classes that I can play at a HM level.  See the link below for the Google Drive link to the document.

The idea behind these very summarized guides is to make an introduction to the class that's a little easier to digest than the Dulfy guides (i.e., only a page or two with an example parse).

I plan to add more classes but at the moment only have Watchman Sentinel and Gunnery Commando.  Eventually I plan to have the following:

DPS

  • Watchman Sentinel
  • Gunnery Commando
  • Vigilance Guardian
  • Tactics Vanguard
  • TK Sage
  • Assault Specialist Commando (may not add or will leave for last, it is still very difficult and doesn't do appreciably more damage than Gunnery)

Tank

  • Defense Guardian
  • Shield Specialist Vanguard
  • Kinetic Combat Shadow

Heals

  • Seer Sage
  • Sawbones Scoundrel
  • Combat Medic Commando

Google Doc Link:  Wyllym's Tips & Tricks

Hope these are helpful.  Happy to prioritize the above in any order if there is more interest in some classes than others.  As always, the Dulfy guides are very good if a bit dense.

Regarding the Watchman Sentinel, the keys to success are all about the following:

  • Keep Cauterize up 100% of the time.  That works out to 6 GCD's, so every 6 actions (note Blade Dance counts for 2) you should be hitting Cauterize.
  • Use Merciless Slash on CD.  The first several times you use this ability the cooldown gets reduced to a minimum of 6 GCD's.  This synergizes with Cauterize so a steady rotation should be in a 6 GCD block that uses Merciless Slash and Cauterize in the same spots each time.  A simple way to do this is to use Merciless > Cauterize back-to-back.  That isn't quite optimal but is easiest to remember.
  • Use Overload Saber/Rebuke/Zen on CD.  These are all off-GCD and all can benefit your DPS.  Overload saber causes your next 3 attacks to put on DoTs, Rebuke reflects damage, and Zen causes all DoTs to crit.  There are times when waiting to use Rebuke and Zen are optimal, though for a newer player it's safest to just use on CD so you don't forget to use them.

re: FREE ADVICE: Jedi Sentinel

Updated the link with a new parse once I upgraded some gear (8/14 224 gear now) .  Hit 6,699 on the dummy!!

Edit - updated again once I realized I was an idiot and wasn't using Dispatch in the sub-30% rotation.  Up to 6,897 DPS!

On a side note I see you only have watchmen. I'm levelling one as combat, is it just not as good period? Or is it just lower dps on parse? I haven't figured out the rotation differences at all so wondering if I should just go watchmen or if i can keep the combat spec?

re: FREE ADVICE: Jedi Sentinel

From a number stanpoint, Watchman is a slightly higher DPS spec but only slightly. For the people running Starparse it shows that in 8 man HM operations about 55% play watchman 52% play combat and 3% play concentration. These numbers vary week to week but that seems to be the general trend.

Here is the link to parse leaderboards for the 1.5 million dummy: http://parsely.io/parser/leaderboard/sentinel/all/1500000/all/live/0/

Here is the link to the stats for 8 man HM operations: http://ixparse.com/stats/?boss=&mode%5B%5D=HM&size%5B%5D=8m&metric=Toons

re: FREE ADVICE: Jedi Sentinel

Combat Sents are currently one of the best burst specs in the game and as Ansley posted the difference between Watchman and Combat is very minimal, Watchman does around 150-200 dps more. The rotation for combat can be a bit tricky to get down but once you do it's a very fun class to play. My advice is to play what you enjoy, maybe even give both classes a try and see what you like best.

That 3% makes me want to play the spec? Is it just me or does playing the unusual seem more fun or perhaps I find unique or finicky more attractive.

re: FREE ADVICE: Jedi Sentinel

The nature of the rotation is very different between Watchman and Combat even though both do good DPS in every fight.

Watchman is all about one heavy hitting ability then 3 different DoTs, though you only have to really watch one since the other two you use on CD.  The spec takes a while to ramp up but does arguably the best sustained damage in the game.  If you like setting a rhythm and sticking to it, you will love Watchman.  If you tend to lose track of your rotation or get lost in movement phases, this may be tougher.

Combat is all about maximizing a damage window used by an ability that drastically increases your armor penetration.  That enables amazing burst.  In addition, changes to Combat from 2.0 to 3.0 and now to 4.0 have made the class more accessible.  Combat is slightly more forgiving as long as you maximize DPS during each burst phase.

A truly optimal Sentinel player will know both.  For example, if you were running Dread Fortress, the optimal specs would be as follows:

  • Nefra:  Watchman since it's just one boss and ranged typically pick up the exploding add.
  • Draxus:  Definitely Combat due to the many many adds and multiple waves.
  • Grob'thok:  Watchman since off-tank should kite adds through lava.
  • Corruptor Zero:  Depends on role.  If lots of burst DPS, Watchman is better to stay on boss and then DoT spread to melee add waves.  If lots of sustained DPS, Combat is better to focus on adds.  In Hard Mode, preference would be to Watchman since ranged can handle Mine mechanic better.
  • Brontes:  Combat would get my slight vote since it is definitely better in the clock-work lightning phase which is typically the tightest DPS phase.  Combat is probably better in the second to last phase though the amount of health for adds would enable Watchman to do well if the player kept their stacks up during the clockwork phase.  Final phase gives the edge to Watchman since their DoTs can keep doing damage even when thrown around the room.

I use to run Combat in early 3.0 when Watchman was awful.  Once they fixed Watchman a bit in 3.0 I started splitting time (i.e., Watchman was slightly better but incredibly boring).  In 4.0, I like both and plan to start running Combat again to provide the flexibility when we run HM Ops.
